Outsourced Information Technology (OIT) has been running our serviced office space (CoWorkSpace)‘s mainline on MyRepublic Cloud PBX for over a year.
Below is a guide on what we learned.
1. What MyRepublic Cloud PBX actually does
- Gives you a main line and extensions for your staff.
- Lets you use both desk phones (Yealink) and mobile apps (MyRepublic Talk).
- Call flows can be adjusted in an admin portal without calling support.
2. Who really owns your number?
When talking about phone systems, there are two types of licences in Singapore:
| Type | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| FBO (Facilities-Based Operator) | Owns the actual telecom infrastructure and number blocks | Singtel, M1, StarHub, MyRepublic |
| SBO (Service-Based Operator) | Provides the cloud platform that runs on top of those numbers | Cloud PBX providers (Microsoft Teams Phone) |
Why it matters for MyRepublic Cloud PBX:
Because MyRepublic is an FBO, the phone numbers sit directly under their control.
This means:
- You keep ownership of your lines.
- Porting numbers later is easier and less risky than with a small SBO.
- You avoid the “middleman” problem where your numbers live with one operator but your service lives with another.
3. How much does MyRepublic Cloud PBX cost in Singapore?
| Plan | Price* | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Extension | ~SGD 9 / month | No setup fee |
| Block of 10 DDI numbers | ~SGD 8.50 / month | Numbers owned by you via MyRepublic (FBO) |
| Mobile softphone app | ~SGD 2.50 / month per user | “MyRepublic Talk” app |
| Desk phones (Yealink) | Hardware + one-time setup | Engineer delivers and installs |
*Prices accurate as of January 2025.
4. What we liked
- Clear SLA and high-redundancy: MyRepublic Cloud PBX appears to run on two servers (active-active).
- Straightforward pricing with no hidden setup fees.
- Admin portal makes it easy to change call flows.
- Extensions, DDIs, and apps billed simply per month
5. What could be better
| Topic | Asterisk / FreePBX (common SBO stack) | MyRepublic Cloud PBX |
|---|---|---|
| Admin password for phones | Full access | Yealink phones are locked (cannot be unlocked) |
| Call recording | Keep as long as you have storage | Only 30 days kept |
| Feature tweaks | Full Asterisk Feature Set | Some features are missing, probably because of the multi-tenant nature of MyRepublic Cloud PBX. In our experiment, we could not perform a blind pickup. Another feature that we could not do was create a virtual extension number (an extension number not tied to a device) without paying additional charges. |
6. Number blocks & porting
- MyRepublic Cloud PBX numbers come directly from an FBO.
- Numbers are portable if you ever move away.
- You avoid the “split block” problem common with smaller SBOs.
7. Verdict
- Want lowest-cost DIY? Open-source PBX still wins on price.
- Want something simple and supported? MyRepublic Cloud PBX is good value.
- Need reliability with local control of numbers? The FBO licence gives extra peace of mind.
